Winter Tournament 2023

Juliet Dunlop Fraser —

Katikati College sent 6 teams off to Winter Tournament this year, the first time for a while we have had basketball attending. Our Prem netball team attended UNISS (Upper North Island Secondary School) in Hamilton, our Boys Football attend the NZSS Trident Football tournament in Whanganui, the Girls Football went to the Grant Jarvis Tournament in Palmerston North, the Boys Hockey attended the NZ Hockey Tier 4 boys tournament in Levin and the Girls Hockey played at the Eveline Hankers Memorial Cup also in Levin. These tournaments started on Monday 28 August and ran through till Friday 1 September. The Boys Senior A Basketball team attended the BBNZ 'A' Premiership in Palmerston North that started on Wednesday 30 August and ran through to Saturday 2 September.

All teams had an extremely successful week playing outstanding sport and creating life long memories. Huge thanks to our coaches, managers and parent help along with everyone who helped to fundraise to get these great kids off to tournament week. Some incredible success with the Girls Football reaching the final for the first time after an amazing week. With an amazing no-loss streak they made the final against Samuel Marsden College with 44 goals for and 2 against. The final was extremely tough with no scoring action for most of the game, the girls finally going down to an extremely unlucky header finding the net to give them a 0-1 loss and the Silver Medal.  Ably led by Captain Meg Harray, the team played some incredibly skilful football over 8 games.

The Boys Hockey team also had a great week making the bronze medal match against Tararua College just losing the semi-final 1-3. The 3rd place match was extremely exciting with the team lead by Baxter Anderson firing up and winning 5-0.

Boys football finished pool play with 3 wins, a draw and a loss putting them in the 9-16 playoffs. They won their playoff going through to meet Wairarapa College where they lost 1-4 to finish 10th, a very respectable place in this strong tournament. Congratulations to Nishi Ravji who was named in the tournament team.

Prem Netball had a very tough week in Hamilton, unfortunately having to deal with multiple injuries and illness among their 11-women squad. Call ups to junior players was necessary but they soldiered on and played remarkable netball in the face of very trying circumstances. Congratulations to Leilani Rooks who captained them strongly throughout and kept the team positive. They finished 29th in C Grade.

Congratulations to Umpires Gemma Groenewald who was selected to officiate the 3rd/4th match for A Grade and reserve for the A Grade final and Siobhan McFadyen who was selected to do the C Grade final.

The very young Girls Hockey team only had one win over their week but lots of very competitive games finishing 10th overall and setting themselves up to do well next year. Captain Makaylah Hull was instrumental with her work-rate keeping the team on track.

Finally Boys A Basketball were very keen to do well at A Prems, but with only a small bench had to dig really deep to see out the week against some fine opposition to finish 9th overall. Some excellent basketball was played and this team led strongly by Isaac Rangikotua, has potential to come back in 2024 and finish in top 3.
