Horticulture needs helpers please

Hilary Johnson —

At Katikati College we are completely re-inventing our Horticulture programme, replacing a tired old gardening-based programme with an innovative, modular, flexible, cross-curricular course that is responsive to the individual learner’s pathway and ability and to industry and tertiary education requirements.

This initiative will involve students in many real life learning experiences.

We are excited to have Supergrans Western Bay of Plenty support us in this project. Individualised programmes based on real life learning experiences cannot be delivered in a conventional classroom style. The assistance of local volunteers as mentors working alongside teachers on College grounds is just what we need to make this possible, supporting the students with knowledge, experience and guidance.

There aren't enough Supergrans to go around and we would love to involve people of all ages. Would YOU be able to help on a regular or casual basis, or do you know of someone who might? The only key requirement is an interest in helping young people succeed.

If you are interested, please contact Hilary Johnson, Innovative Horticulture Manager, at hjohnson@katikaticollege.school.nz or Anne Billings, Supergrans Coordinator, at anne@supergranswbop.co.nz.
