Katikati College "Bring Your Own Device"
Hopefully you are aware that students in Year 9 - 13 need to bring their own device to school.
Having students bring their own device to school allows us to have digital aspects of learning blended into all areas. It allows for anytime-anywhere learning, which is authentic, collaborative, personalised and future-focussed.
To ensure security for devices we have powered lockers available in the Library foyer.
We appreciate that for some families this extra cost will be significant and we have a limited number of devices that we are able to loan to students. If you would like to be considered for one of these devices please contact the College to discuss this further (principal@katikaticollege.school.nz).
If, as a business or community group, you would like to help us support these students please also contact me. We really welcome this sort of support.
The following sets out the minimum specifications that we believe are needed in a device. It also offers some options of where devices can be purchased from.
Information regarding devices
Features that we feel essential are:
- Minimum screen size of 9”
- Wireless internet capability
- Battery life which will last a typical school day (at least 6 hours)
Other features to consider:
- Lightweight but robust enough to handle daily use
- Suitable, durable bag / cover for protection
- Suitable for use online and offline
- Security software
For all types of devices we recommend that:
- They be less than 4 years old
- They have AntiVirus software if appropriate
- Students make regular back-ups of critical work on external storage (eg. external hard drive or USB drive)
Suitable devices would include: Chromebook (HP, Lenovo or Acer), laptop (anything with an i5 or i7 series processor), iPad, tablet (Samsung or Lenovo).
The cheapest alternative is a Chromebook, unless you are going into Art Design or Music, which we then suggest you speak to us about best options.
These devices can be purchased from a variety of retailers including Noel Leeming and PBTech.
