Year 5 noho marae

Grant O'Connor —

This week our Year 5 students ventured to Mangatangi to experience a noho marae.   Mangatangi marae is the marae of our Kaumātua, Warahi Paki.   All our students were able to experience Te Ao Māori through an overnight stay.   Students took part in many of the activities that you would usually experience such as flax weaving, kapa haka and learning pepeha (a speech about where your family are from).

Below is the pepeha that explains the narrative behind the tukutuku panel (image above).   uIt was gifted to symbolise the relationship between Ōkaurirahi (Kaurilands School) and Mangatangi marae.

Ko Titirangi te maunga

Titirangi is the mountain

Ko Te Wao Nui a Tiriwa te ngahere

Te Wao Nui a Tiriwa is the forest

Ko Manukau te moana

Manukau is the ocean

Ko Waikūmete te manga

 Waikūmete is our stream

Ko Te Kawerau ā Maki te iwi

Te Kawerau ā Maki is the tribe

Ko te Wharekura te marae

Te Wharekura (hall) is the meeting house

Ko Ōkaurirahi te kura

Te whakataukī tērā

Our motto is . . .

Ko Whaiā te Mātauranga

Seeking knowledge,

E tū pakari ana

Standing strong,

E totoro teitei ana

Reaching high

Haumi e!

Gather together!

Hui e!

Bind together!

Taiki e!

All is set!

We would like to thank ALL of the parents that came with us to the marae.  Without you this experience would not have been possible.

We will share photos in the next newsletter.
