Kaurilands Cricket Winners!

Steve Van Nes —

The Western Interschool Cricket Competition on 11th March was a day to remember for our Kaurilands Cricketers. Eight schools and twenty teams entered the tournament and Kaurilands came out on top, bringing home the cup!

After the disappointment of having the event postponed a week earlier, we were able to sneak in another week of lunchtime training. Leading up to the event, it was great to see the boys build teamship and comradery. A lot of our players had never played cricket before and it was a wonderful opportunity for them to try their hand at something new.

On the day of the tournament, I was filled with pride. From the outset all our players represented Kaurilands with honour. The boys were positive, encouraging and most importantly, enjoying themselves.

Leading up to the cup final, Kaurilands and Konini were both undefeated. After batting first, Kaurilands set a total of 163 runs. With some accurate bowling and sharp fielding, we were able to successfully defend that target and restrict Konini to 153.

To cap off the day, all the players representing Kaurilands sung a ‘Okaurirahi e’, a waita dedicated to the fantastic parent support.

The team have qualified to compete in the wider Auckland competition being held at Eden Park later in the year.

What a joy it has been to coach these fine young gentlemen.
