News from Rūma 21

Kristin Lee —

This term Rūma 21 has been learning about native birds. Last week we wrote about piwakawaka (fantails) and created our own art. Aren't they amazing?

What is a pīwakawaka?

A pīwakawaka (fantail) is a small bird and they are 16 centimetres tall. They eat insects. When fantails get food, they go upside down to get food from the ground and you can put a bowl with water to get them in your garden. Did you know that you can only find pīwakawaka in New Zealand and you can find them in the bush? They have a fanned tail to help them fly and they are a killing machine because they only eat insects.

A Day in the Life of a Pīwakawaka

Dear Diary

This morning I woke up and went to get breakfast for my chick. When I was coming back suddenly a cat was outside my nest! “Oh no, there is a cat outside my nest!” I said. I was very scared. Then before I could do anything the cat ran away. I went back to my nest and fed my chicks. At last we got ready for bed and I went to say goodbye to all my friends. Good night diary.
