Room 3a News

Laura —

This Term Room 3A, and the rest of Year 5, have been inquiring into Myths and Legends from around the world.  We have looked at Myths from Aotearoa, Fiji, India, Japan, Samoa, Europe and many other places around the world.

The children worked hard to create fish hooks based on the story of Te Ika-a-Maui (the Māori name for the North Island- which means "the fish of Maui") a story all about how Maui pulled up the North Island from the ocean using his fish hook.  Check them out below!

Another exciting focus for the children of 3A was learning about the Japanese Sakura Legends. There is a legend in Japanese mythology explaining why the cherry blossoms are so exquisite.  Each spring, the fairy Konohanasakuya-hime hovers low in the warm spring sky, wakening the sleeping cherry trees to life with her delicate breath.  Her name literally means “cherry blossom blooming princess.”  She is also the goddess of Mount Fuji and a symbol of delicate earthly life in Japanese mythology.
