Room 30

Violet Luatua —

What a great year 2017 has been for Room 30!  Our Term 1 Inquiry centred around ‘Treasures and Pirates’ and the students were very interested in exploring treasures they had at home/treasures at Kaurilands School/treasures around the world. In Term 2 our focus was ‘What’s Underneath?’ for Inquiry and we discovered many hidden gems in our school creek and bush eg. eels, insects, plants. We went on a trip to Arataki and enjoyed learning outdoors and finding more native plants/insects. Room 30 also could not wait to celebrate Matariki and created a Korowai cloak to celebrate their learning (Ako). ‘What’s Up Above?’ became our focus for Term 3, with a trip to Stardome Observatory followed by an in-depth study on the solar system.  Our PB4L focus was ‘Whanaungatanga’ (building positive relationships) and the students explored various ways they could practise it.   In Term 4 our Inquiry was ‘Inventors’ with everyday materials.  Room 30 was inspired after their visit to the year 5-6 classes who were also exploring being an inventor.   Near the end of the year we learnt how to make pizza with Francesco and enjoyed it very much.  Room 30 could not wait to go home and share their new knowledge with their whānau. It has been a delight to teach Room 30 and they are looking forward to their new adventures in Year 3.
