You may have read some local commentary about Kavanagh Rugby recently. Please be reassured that Kavanagh College rugby is most definitely an established part of our community’s fabric and a valuable and valued sporting option for our young people.

We are currently fielding a First XV in the Otago-wide competition, a colts team in the U-16 grade, a composite team with a couple of other schools in the U-14 grade (where we provide at least 12 of the players every week) and two very strong girls teams. In addition we have in excess of 20 of our Year 7/8 children playing for clubs. The future is considerably brighter than some would have us believe.

As with all schools who like to provide equitable opportunities beyond simply rugby, we experience years of rebuilding – 2017 is such a year. We have only five Year 13s in the First XV meaning we have a good base for 2018. With our colts team playing competitively in a notably tough grade this year we are confident their pathway into First XV rugby is the correct one and look forward to a strong squad next year.

Kavanagh College is committed to providing opportunities for our students to excel in as many fields as possible and rugby is no exception. Certainly from the earlier days of two of our foundation schools, Christian Brothers’ High School and then St Pauls High School, we have a grand tradition of competing in our national sport with distinction, resourcefulness and pride. There is no prospect of this changing.
