MĀORI LANGUAGE WEEK

Kia kaha Te reo Māori!

In 1987 Te reo Māori was made an official language of New Zealand under the Maori Language Act. 

At Kavanagh College this week we have been celebrating our beautiful language. At midday on Monday about 250 staff and students gathered by the flag pole and made history by joining a million other kiwis across Aotearoa in Te Wā Tuku Reo (Māori Language Moment). We sang two waiata (songs) and performed the school haka that was led by Year 7 student Joseph Kelly. At lunchtime today Mrs Nicholson read kōrero ō mua (stories from the past) to students. Tomorrow in the canteen classroom we will finish with a kai o te ahiahi (traditional lunch) and waiata (songs) - nau mai koutou (everyone is welcome).
