Principal's Message

Steve Read —

A Bit of Sport, A Bit of Culture

Greetings, Kia ora, Talofa, Mālō e lelei

The Southern Catholic Schools Junior Sports Tournament was held yesterday involving nearly 500 students, over 140 from Kavanagh. Year 7 – 10 students from St Peters, Verdon, St Kevin’s, Kavanagh, St Mary’s Mosgiel and St Joseph’s Oamaru were lucky most of the games were held inside the Edgar Centre, although it wasn’t much warmer than outside. The rugby was held at Kettle Park. The students enjoyed a great day of competition.

Overall results saw Kavanagh come second to Verdon College.

This Sunday and Monday sees our Senior A, Senior B and Intermediate Gold Netball teams competing in the Otago Secondary School Netball tournament at the Edgar Centre and we wish them every success.

Excitement is starting to build for the Kavanagh College Formal, to be held at the Town Hall next Friday night. It is a great occasion and a chance to see our wonderful young men and woman enjoy a social event in a mature manner.

My thanks to Merlyn Gunn, Samara Rowe, Ella Seuseu-Musgrave and Mr Campbell for their organisation of the Formal. It promises to be a memorable evening. We know what a special and important occasion the Formal is for students and families, as it is for us, and we want it to be a wonderful night. On Tuesday morning Mr Campbell, the Police and myself will be speaking to the students about rules and expectations. Parents, please support your child to make good choices to have an enjoyable and safe night.

The annual House Singing competition is in the last week of term and practices got underway this week, I look forward to some stellar performances. The “Big Sing” is coming up next Wednesday at the Town Hall with the Kavanagh Choir set to perform at 2.30pm. There is also a public performance from all schools starting at 6.30pm.

The College is holding a mufti-day next Wednesday as part of the Pentecost Mass. This is a celebration and students are encouraged to come dressed up in their National colours. We are also asking students to bring along donations of grooming or hygiene products that will be given to the Women’s Refuge.

God Bless
