Year 13 Biology

Kerron Thomson —

Last week the Year 13 Biologists went on a three-day expedition to the New Zealand Marine Studies Centre at Portobello.

This was a unique opportunity to work with real scientists in a marine science context.

Students were introduced to life on a rocky shore and worked on individual projects for crabs living in the intertidal zone. Projects ranged from looking at whether the rate of feeding changed with different sea temperatures to timing how long it took for the animal to find shelter with varying levels of pH.

The chance for students to work with live animals, appreciate the place they have in our environment, and consider the ways scientists work to solve problems was invaluable. We thank the Marine Studies Centre staff for their expertise on the day.
