Kavanagh Victorious!

The Southern Catholic Schools Junior Sports Tournament was held yesterday involving nearly 500 students, over 140 from Kavanagh. Year 7 – 10 students from St Peters, Verdon, St Kevin’s and Kavanagh were lucky most of the games were held inside the Edgar Centre, although it wasn’t much warmer than outside. The students enjoyed a great day of competition and congratulations go to our students for the overall win over Verdon College.

It was great to see the Senior Girls Sevens Rugby team make the final in the Otago Secondary Schools B grade competition. They played the final yesterday against St Hilda’s ending in a great win 24 – 14. Sunday and Monday saw our Senior A, Year 10A & Year9A Netball teams competing in the Otago Secondary School Netball tournament involving over 450 students. Our teams played well and represented the College with pride. A special thanks to the coaches and managers some of whom had taken time off work to support our students.

Ongoing professional learning is an important part of any teacher’s journey. Kavanagh College is no different and professional development undertaken this year includes strategies for teaching students with dyslexia, modern learning approaches, a presentation from the Education Council on appraisal and evidence, teaching as inquiry, restorative justice practices and our Head of Religious Studies Laurel Lanner reminded us of our rich history involving our Founding Orders. We also recently held a session with a wellness focus – supporting colleagues and students which was well delivered by Father Mark Chamberlain.

The annual House Singing competition is in the last week of term and practices got underway this week. Representatives from each House drew out their songs from a selection at last week’s assembly and I look forward to some stellar performances.

My thanks to Charlotte Chesney, Rhian Aitken and Mrs Kerr-Bell for their organisation of the Formal at the Town Hall tomorrow night. It promises to be a memorable evening. We know what a special and important occasion the Formal is for students and families, as it is for us, and we want it to be a wonderful night. On Tuesday morning I spoke to the students about rules and expectations. Parents please support your child to make good choices to have an enjoyable and safe night.
