Colette Mahoney —

An interview with Kavanagh student, Tom Davis, the author and illustrator of Komodo. The exciting sequel to his first book Lizard.

Q: Can you give us a brief description of what your new book is about?

A: The plot of the new book was hinted at in the last one, Vicious, the evil king of the Komodo Dragons has stolen Scales ring and with it his power. Scale and his friends then have to discover a strange new species of lizard known as Midnight Geckoes. With the Midnight Gekoes help, they need to regain their powers and save their home.

Q: Did you always plan on writing a sequel to your first book Lizard?

A: Not necessarily- I was originally going to keep it as just one book, but as I wrote the first one, new ideas began to form for a second, and soon I had enough for a whole new book!

Q: You are another year older and wiser...have your literary inspirations changed from last year?

A: My inspirations haven't really changed. My two favourite authors and book series are The Wizards of Once by Cressida Cowell and the Wings of Fire series by Tui Sutherland. I thoroughly recommend both of them.

Q: How long did it take you to finish Komodo?

A: It took me nearly a year, just like my first book, although Komodo is a whole third longer than Lizard!

Q: What advice would you give other students who are thinking of writing and illustrating their own books?

A: Write about what you are passionate about and persist. It is likely you will think about giving up at times, but if you think about the end result, it will be completely worth it.

Q: Will there be another book about our friend Scale and his lizard companions?

A: I am hoping to write at least one more book in the Lizard series, and I have some ideas for other books too!

Q: Writing and illustrating are obviously something you love to do. Can you see yourself as a children's author one day?

A: I am certainly considering it as a likely future career.

Thank you for the interview Tom and well done on your literary achievements. Come in and check out Tom's latest book, Komodo in the library.
