Who do I contact if my child is going to be absent?

If your child is sick, please phone reception and leave a message on 04-479 6685 or email absences@khandallah.school.nz with the child’s name, whānau group and the reason for their absence. It is also helpful to copy the classroom teachers into the email. You can also submit an absence through the HERO app. Please also let reception know if your child is going to be away for an extended time such as on holiday. Request for leave should be made to principal in good time.

What time do the bells ring?

Our school runs by the following schedule:

  • 8.30am – Bell rings to indicate children can come into class.

  • 8.55am – Morning bell rings for children to come to class.

  • 10.45am – Morning tea time. Children are supervised to eat for 5 minutes.

  • 11.15am – Bell goes for children to return to class.

  • 12.45pm – Lunch time. Children are supervised to eat for 10 minutes.

  • 1.20pm – Bell goes for children to return to class.

  • 2.55pm – Bell goes for the end of the school day.

How do I make contact with my child’s teacher?

Teachers are available in their classes on school days from 8.30am for a brief conversation. If you would like more time to meet, please contact the teacher, either in person or via email to make an appointment.

Do you do structured maths and literacy?

Yes! We have been part of the Better Start Literacy Approach (BSLA) since 2020 and our juniors use this structured literacy approach. As they move off BSLA, they move onto the iDeaL program.

Our school has chosen to use Maths No Problem as our structured mathematics approach.

Do you have out of zone places?

Sometimes! If you live out of zone but are interested in attending Khandallah School, make contact with our office.

What does transition from ECE into school look like?

Once enrolled and getting close to your start date, one of our Kōwhai team will touch base with you to arrange school visits. Please talk to them if you think your child will need more than a couple to help their transition. If your child has a specific diagnosis, receives early intervention support or is likely to find this transition difficult, we encourage you to touch base with Trelise, our Year 0-1 Team Leader.

Does my child have to wear a hat?

Yes. Children are expected to wear wide-brimmed hats in Term 1 and 4. If they do not have a wide-brimmed hat in these terms, they will be asked to play in shaded places. Caps, snapbacks and other such hats are not acceptable. Khandallah School sunhats are available for purchase in the school office for $22. These can also be billed via HERO.

How do I know when there is an upcoming event or if something is cancelled?

We have calendars on the front page of our website and through the HERO app. These are updated reguarly - please keep an eye on this.

What is the school bank account number?

We bank with ASB and our account number is 12-3223-0137390-00. If you are making a payment, please include the child’s family name, room number and specific reference eg. Miniball etc. You can also make payments via HERO both as full payments or part payments.

How are the school syndicates organised?

Our school is organised into two syndicates.

  • The junior syndicate consists of two teams, Kōwhai, Years 0–1, and Mataī, Years 2–3

  • The senior syndicate is Kauri, which comprises three hubs. Kākā is our Year 4 hub. Kererū and Korimako are our Year 5 and 6 hubs.

Where can I park when I come to visit?

Parking is limited at Khandallah School. There is one accessibility car park in the staff car park, situated off Clark St. Please use Clark Street, Simla Crescent, Woodmancote Road or surrounding streets. There is also an additional car park next to Khandallah Park at the end of Woodmancote Road. The staff car park is not to be used by parents, students or Easy Swim clients between 8.30am and 4.30pm Monday – Friday.

Access to the top court is for designated vehicles only. There is one accessibility car park beside the school pool. This is for cardholders only.

What is the process for making a complaint?

If you would like to make a complaint, please go to School Docs, and search “complaints” The username is khandallah and the password is kaukau.

What options are available for after school care?

YMCA host a before school, after-school and holiday program onsite. Please see their website https://ycentral.nz/ykids/#y-kids

What options are there for lunch orders and how do I order these?

Where can I pick up and drop off my child?

For quick pick-ups and drop offs, before and after school, where children are just getting in and out, the drop off on Clark Street is ideal. This is a no stopping zone and designed for children who can get in and out of the car independently. Please note there is no pedestrian access through the drop off/pick up zone during these times. Alternatively, there is parking available on Clark Street, Simla Crescent and Woodmancote Road. Road patrols operate on Clark Street and Woodmancote Road daily. All children are expected to use these. We also encourage adults to model safe practises and use crossings too.

If you are picking up or dropping off your child during school hours, they must be signed in/out at the School Office.

How can I get involved in school life?

At Khandallah School we are very fortunate to have the Home and School Association whose main goal is to bridge the gap between home and school environments. In doing so, it provides opportunities for fundraising which directly helps the school. Some of the major fundraisers include the Kids Kaukau Challenge, usually held in November, Sausage Sizzles, Calendar Art, Discos and many more. To get involved, please contact Hands@khandallah.school.nz.

What about homework?

At Khandallah School, homework is not compulsory but it is a great opportunity to reinforce your child’s learning. If you would like to reinforce learning at home, great options are reading to or with your child (no matter their age!), baking together, playing board games, adding up the groceries, looking for patterns when out driving etc. Learning is all around us! Our students from Year 2 onwards, also have a Maths Whizz account that they can access at home. Please contact us if you need their login credentials.
