Khandallah School is a learning community for children from New Entrants to Year 6. Our school facilities include 28 teaching spaces, Hall, Library, covered heated swimming pool, playgrounds and fields. Our school is zoned. Most children from our school go on to Raroa Normal Intermediate School.

Our School

Our school is organised into Junior and Senior areas. The Junior school consists of two Teams; Kowhai (Years 0 and 1) and Matai (Years 2 and 3). The Senior Team is called Kauri (Years 4 – 6). Within each team, teachers and children work in collaborative hubs to maximize teacher strengths and meet diverse needs.

The school roll peaks in December at approximately 400 students. Our staff include Teachers, Principal, Deputy Principal, Executive Officer and Support Staff (Receptionist, Caretaker, Librarian and Learning Assistants).

We have an active Home and School Association. Before and after school care is available on site through the YMCA, who also run holiday programmes from the school.

Our History

Nestled on the slopes of Mt Kaukau (445m), Khandallah means camp or resting place of God. The name is said to come from a homestead built in 1884 by Captain James Andrew who had recently returned from duty in India. Khandallah is named after Khandela Rajasthan.

The school opened in 1893 in a small public hall at the bottom of what is now Simla Crescent. The present site was first occupied in April 1894 when 40 children attended. There was one large room divided by a folding partition to separate the Junior School from the Senior School.

The first building and subsequent buildings were destroyed by fire in December 1972. The oldest building on site is the Junior block which was built in 1940. A building refurbishment and improvement plan is being implemented as funds allow. This includes the construction of a new flexible learning environment accommodating the senior school completed in 2018.
