Otago Athletics

Liam Condliffe & Flynn Haig —

With 65 athletes competing it was a very busy day and a half for King’s athletes.

On the Friday Joel Bolton and Tainui Little were battling for supremacy in the Hammer. Joel was leading until Tainui's last throw. This meant for Joel's last throw he had to throw big; which he did, so we had a 1st and 2nd in the first Field event.

Ezekiel Stewart and Hugh Askerud had their 3000m race in the Under 16 grade. This proved to be very exciting as Ezekiel had to do a sprint finish to claim 1st prize and Hugh finished 3rd. Ocean Allemann was also 1st in the Senior 3000m. This was a good start for the weekend.

On Saturday in the Under 14’s, Corey Pope and Tyler Metua were busy in the 100m and 200m and both made the finals. Noah McDowall had three events with the 1500m, Long Jump and then had a rest while he waited for the relay. Kalani Vanisi was also busy with the Discus, High Jump and also the Relay.  Zaine Murdoch and Taylor Smith also had good days in the field.

He did the maximum number of events that you were allowed to do; a tired young man at the end of the day. Ollie Young ran two PB’s on Saturday so he will be pleased with his races. Jackson Clearwater will be pleased that he left Cricket early to continue his strong form in Otago for Javelin.

Overall the weekend was very successful with 32 athletes qualifying for the South Islands. We would like to thank the parents and staff who helped out on the High Jump on Saturday and to all the supporters who came and helped the athletes perform their best. We would like to thank Mrs Calverley, Ms Swaney, Mrs Chapman and Mr Koedyk for all the work they do on the day and also behind the scenes.
