Have you been to this special place?

Ted Menzies —

Tucked away on Blueskin Bay Road, resting in a neat little valley is one of the hidden gems of Dunedin. While many of us have been there at least once, Orokonui eco Sanctuary is a place which few have experienced to its fullest extent.

The unique bird species, cryptic lizards and extraordinary plant life are now rarely seen by the everyday kiwi, which makes Orokonui a space where one can experience these wonders for themselves.

When you sit amongst the Kaka as they squabble with one another, seeing Tui’s in all their ferocious glory race through the branches, staring in awe at the mouse-like Rifleman as they scamper up tree trunks, you feel outstandingly privileged to be able to witness a sneak peek of New Zealand’s natural glory.

Unfortunately, these havens are few and far between. Covid-19 has been so incredibly hard on wildlife sanctuaries across New Zealand. Places which are not being visited enough are taking a significant hit without making the noise that small business owners are. That is why it is vital that we try and support Orokonui and all its inhabitants. Support the Sanctuary with a small donation, or better yet, experience it for yourself.

Spot the skinks scurrying through the grass, and visit the Takahe Waimarie and Bennett as they march proudly through the grasslands of Orokonui.

See the 14 newly fledged Kaka explore their home, and try and find the elusive Jeweled Gecko amongst the Coprosmas.

They need your help, donate, and/or visit. Scan the QR code to be taken directly to the Orokonui page to find out more.

Help protect New Zealand’s bountiful wildlife for generations of the future to enjoy.  Thank you
