A gripping final for King's 1st XI Football

Rachel Heller —

It was an outstanding game with a bittersweet ending to the season.

The King’s 1st XI played the final of the local Secondary Schools Football Competition against Otago Boy’s 1st XI on Wednesday.

Unbeaten to this point, and with two victories over Otago Boys' earlier in the season, the boys came into the game with confidence and a sense of belief.

A good showing in the first half saw King’s go into the break with a one-nil lead, courtesy of a well-worked goal finished off by Zac Baird-Hodge.

Otago Boy’s came out strong in the second half and deservedly grabbed an equaliser midway through the half.

One-all at full time, the game went to, two, ten minute periods of extra time, with King’s looking the side more likely to score but unable to find the back of the net. The result came down to a penalty shootout, with Otago Boy’s coming away victors, 4 – 1.

The boys were obviously bitterly disappointed to finish the season on such a note, but played an outstanding game and were gracious in defeat.

A special mention to the thirteen Year 13s for whom this was their final game for King’s:

  • Hugh Askerud, Zac Baird-Hodge, Sam Cosgrove, Angus Dagg, Spencer Gable, Scott Glover, Fletcher Graham, Harry Gould, Robbie Heller, Hamish Mair, Oli Phillips, Patrick Ward, and Luke Williams.

Thank you for your years of service and dedication to King’s Football.
