King's notices for this week

Jo Harford —

See below for details of a special workshop for parents and preseason rugby training.

Workshop for Parents: "It's time we talked: Pornography, young people and sexuality today."

As a school we want to inform our community, and assist our parents to address the issues our students are faced with through the internet, media and social media sites.

We are proud to be able to offer such an opportunity by being part of the network of secondary schools organising an Otago wide workshop for parents of teenagers and pre-teens being presented by Maree Crabbe. Having had Maree present to principals, teachers and counsellors last year, members of the Otago Secondary School Principals Association felt strongly that her information and messages would be very valuable for all our parents and so we have been very fortunate to be able to get her to Dunedin again for this workshop.

The workshop :" It's time we talked: Pornography, young people and sexuality today" assists parents to understand the impact of pornography on young people and what they can do to address it. It will be held on Tuesday 7th March 7.00-9.00pm at the Otago Boys' High School auditorium

Maree Crabbe is an Australian researcher who coordinates the community education project Reality & Risk: Pornography, young people and sexuality. She is co-producer and co-director of the documentary films Love and Sex in an Age of Pornography, broadcast in seven countries, and The Porn Factor, broadcast recently in Australia, and author of In the Picture – a whole school resource to assist secondary schools to address the influence of explicit sexual imagery. Maree has worked with young people – and on issues affecting young people – in the community sector for over 20 years. Maree’s articles on young people, sexuality and pornography have been published online and in print media.

Maree is an engaging, informative and expert speaker who works all over Australasia. I would urge you to take the time to attend the workshop.

Please pass onto friends and family who you also think are keen to support their daughters and sons to build healthy and happy relationships.

This workshop is free and available to all parents in Otago thanks to the generous support of the Otago Community Trust.

PRESEASON RUGBY TRAINING

The King’s High School Lion’s Rugby Club warmly invites ALL players who intend on playing rugby this season to attend Preseason every Monday and Wednesday at Southern RFC, Bathgate Park from 3:15pm – 4:30pm.

It would be great to see as many players there getting fit for rugby, improving their skills and becoming confident players in contact situations.

On Wednesday’s there will be Specialist Positional Coaching Clinics. We are extremely fortunate to have the services of Shayne Flanagan (Former Otago B, Dunedin RFC and Varsity A Coach who has won multiple Dunedin Club Championships), who will lead the Forwards and Seilala Mapusua with the Backs. Lion’s Rugby Club Coaches will provide assistance. We will also from time to time have other guest Coaches from the Highlanders, ORFU and local community. The Lion’s Rugby Club wish to promote these five key focuses for these sessions:

• SAFETY & CONFIDENCE

• CORRECT TECHNIQUE

• UNDERSTANDING ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITES

• PHYSICAL CONDITIONING

• PERFORMANCE

It would be great to see as many players there as possible taking up what is an awesome opportunity. If you’re serious about your Rugby this is a no brainer!

If you require further information please contact Mr Jury (Director of Rugby).
