Earth and Space Science - Snorkel Adventure

Daniel Bleckinger —

"The best way to observe a fish is to become a fish" -Jacques Cousteau.

Earth and Space Science students have been studying Ocean Science and Human Issues related to the Oceans. To finish off the year, we decided to have a first hand look at a small part of the local ocean habitat near Port Chalmers.

Divers found nudibranchs, chitens, sea tulips, various sponges, and even the occasional seaweed monster!

This was part of a three part course through Dive Otago that involved a classroom session learning about diving theory and safety, a pool session in the Dive Otago Pool to get familiar with the equipment and practice new skills, and finally a day at the beach exploring the underwater world.

Students currently in Year 12 will have the opportunity next year to try out SCUBA Diving as they learn more about Oceanography in Level 3 Earth and Space Science.
