Dave Conrad —

Last Friday, Eric Murray the double Olympic Champion Rower visited King’s High School to speak to secondary students from throughout Otago.

A large number of King’s pupils were able to attend and listen to his thoughts on what he did to become one of the world’s elite Rowers and, in combination with Hamish Bond, become eight time World Champions.

His message for success was pretty simple, “hard work and always trying to be the best that I could be every time I competed”. He also spoke about his own time at high school and how he pretty much had a go at any and every sport. He told the students that his biggest regret was not learning a second language at school especially as the last 15 years of competing had taken him to so many amazing countries and cultures.

He kept the audience entertained throughout the 45 minute address and at the end the pupils were able to direct questions to Eric. To finish he then got photo’s with school groups where his Olympic Medals were on display.

Big thanks to OSSSA for organising this brilliant opportunity to meet a Kiwi Rowing Icon.
