International Languages Week, May 21-25

Robyn Brooks —

This week we celebrated International Languages Week at King’s, starting off each day with a greeting from another language in our daily notices.

The week coincides with the Languages World Championships, which is an initiative of Education Perfect, a company based in Dunedin. The online Championships run for 10 days from May 21 – 31 and students from all over the world try to get as many points as possible as they learn/revise vocabulary. The leading student at King’s is currently Hamish den Dekker, who has already achieved an Emerald Award with over 5000 points. On Wednesday, all of the Year 10 languages classes spent a period together in the Library working on Language Perfect and competing in group activities.

A visit from the sushi van proved very popular with both staff and students when it visited school on Wednesday lunch-time; the lead photo shows Dr Fiona Thomas grabbing a bite to eat on her last day of work at King's.  Sam Judge was the winner of the International Languages Week Kahoot Competition, which was held on Thursday lunch-time.

On Thursday evening, Mrs Marsh held the first meeting for parents and students interested in being part of the 2020 Japan Trip. These trips are now well established at King’s and provide a fantastic opportunity for students of Japanese to experience the language and culture!
