South Island Junior Water Polo Tournament

Vicki Jopson —

The week of November 20th, our Junior Lions Water Polo team travelled to Blenheim to compete in the Junior South Island Secondary Schools Tournament. We were the only boys team from Dunedin and for that matter, South of Christchurch.

This is the first time our team has been able to attend since 2019 due to cancellation of the tournament as well as lack of numbers. It was an amazing experience for our players who, for most, have never played in this level of a tournament. The scores did not go our way, however, the amount that was learned invaluable.

The team never gave up which was testament when they were down 0 – 7 at half time against Christ’s College and came back to lose by only one with a score of 7 – 8, holding Christ’s to just one point in the second half. The boys showed the true heart of a lion. They were the favourite of the other teams due to the way they fought, supported the other teams showing sportsmanship and courage. They approached every game with a positive attitude working towards the team goals and their own personal goals.

A big thank you goes out to Suzie Harrold (manager) and Gareth Maree (parent help) for all of there support of the boys.

To Coach Ted Menzies, you have been so positive and a real inspiration to the boys. I look forward to how these young men develop over the next couple of years.
