The Kingsmen
Malachi Masada Buschl 2013 – 2017
Malachi grew up in Outram, where the school had a strong Hockey background. Malachi got his start in Hockey when Georgia, his older sister’s team was short a player and she talked her little brother into filling in. It certainly was a good introduction to an outstanding career.
At King's, Malachi was Captain of the 1st XI Hockey. He gained the award for Outstanding Player in 1st XI Hockey and he was awarded a School Blue and Silver Blue for Hockey.
In his final year at the school Malachi was Head Boy. At the end of year Prizegiving, he was awarded Excellence in History, Physical Education, and Biology. He also gained an Otago University Performance Entrance Scholarship and an Otago University Class Act Scholarship, as well as an All-round Academic Excellence.
On leaving King's Malachi attended the University of Otago. In his first year he became the University of Otago Sportsman of the Year.
Malachi wasn’t even at the award ceremony; he was busy playing in an international competition (fair enough). He studied Biochemistry, and said he’s able to manage the balance between studies and being a nationally-renowned Hockey player.
As an 18-year-old he made his international debut during the tour of India in July and gave a good account of himself playing in all three games. He was named in the U21 Men's squad for the Sultan of Johor Cup in Malaysia in October.
During 2019 Malachi was a NZ U19 Hockey representative, a Southern U18 Hockey representative and a Southern Senior Men Hockey team member.
In 2020 Covid put a stop to all representative Hockey. Malachi was selected in 2021 as a member of the 28 strong Hockey NZ Performance Network. In 2022 he was a member of the winning Otago Ford National Hockey Championship team.
Malachi certainly has a great future ahead and we can look forward to his future successes.
