Opportunity awaits!

Vicki Jopson —

The NZ Marine Studies Centre, is holding a 5 day Science Extension and Enrichment Programme for Year 9 Māori students.

This programme is in conjunction with the Māori Health Workforce Development Unit and the School of Physical Education at the University of Otago.

This is a non-residential programme occurring on the 18th and 25th of October, and the 1st, 8th and 15th of November. The cost of the programme in 2019 is mostly covered by a Ministry of Education opportunities for gifted and talented students contract. Therefore, is only $50.00 ($57.50 inc gst) per participant.

The primary focus will be on a team research project, mentored by postgraduate research students, that integrates a range of extension experiences in Marine Science, Health Science, and Sport and Exercise Science. Although marine, health and sport sciences are the vehicle for learning and sharing experiences, the participants do not have to be top science students. Their talents may lie in the field of kapa haka, te reo, drama, music, language, sport, computer technology, mathematics and more; or they may simply be the student who asks all the probing awkward questions.

To qualify, participants must commit to the whole programme and be identified by their whānau/peers/school/teachers/gifted and talented coordinator as exceptional. Ideally they will be keen on science and also have some interest in a future career in health sciences and/or sport and exercise science.

If you would like to apply, please email Mrs. Jopson jp@kingshigh.school.nz for the application forms. The deadline to complete forms is 26th of September.
