Hands-On at Otago

Rachel Campbell —

Hands-On at Otago is back for another year – 14th–19th January 2024!

Hands-On at Otago is a week-long summer camp at the University of Otago. Students can get a taste of university life – living in a Residential College, participating in research projects and choosing their favourite topics from a range of subjects. Hands-On at Otago is open to all students who are in Year 12 or 13 in 2024. Students take part in a project and will be guided by, and learn from, our world-class lecturers in a subject area of their choice (over 30 to choose from). Stay in our newest Residential College and experience living like an Otago student for a week on our Dunedin Campus.

There are subjects from across Business, Humanities, Health Science and Sciences and the week includes:

  • Taking part in a Research Project
  • Afternoon ‘taster’ programme – fun interactive activities showing the diversity of research.
  • Social activities in the afternoon and evenings
  • An opportunity to meet and build friendships with other like-minded Year 12 and 13 students from all over New Zealand
  • Students are also supported and supervised by our ‘red shirts’ current Otago students and members of our committee who stay with the students all week.

Students who apply should note that each year we receive significantly more applications than we have places for, so they should prepare their applications with care. The supporting material supplied by students is read by members of the Hands-On at Otago Committee and is often the deciding factor in their acceptance.

On the website you can also discover what other activities are on offer, how much the week will cost, ideas for fundraising, information on the Scholarships that are available, transport options and accommodation details. All applications and Scholarship applications for Hands-On at Otago will need to be submitted through the Hands-On at Otago webpage.

Applications are now open and will close on September 7th.
