New Zealand International Biology Olympiad (NZIBO) Selection Camp

Vicki Jopson —

Thomas Bowen was one of only a few students across Dunedin involved with the NZIBO Selection Camp. A fantastic opportunity organised by previous Old Boy of King's Liam Hewson.

Thomas was one of 22 students selected from around New Zealand. The students were put through their paces with a number of learning opportunities. These included visiting Orokonui, studying Sea Lions, and researching aboard the Polaris II (the Otago University Research Vessel).

The students worked with University Researchers and Professors in the Botany Department, Zoology Department as well as the Biochemistry Lab where they learned how to sequence DNA in order to find mutations and differences between people in regard to their genetic markers.

This activity was trying to find a particular gene that was causing a disorder that has presented itself recently in some people.

For anyone interested in being involved with the NZIBO for 2023, see Mrs Jopson. Registrations will open up in June/July, be quick!
