Year 13 Biology trip invaluable experience

Vicki Jopson —

Last Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, the Year 13 Biology classes made their way to the NZ Marine Study Centre in Portobello in order to gather data for their 3.1 Animal Investigation Assessment.

On day one the students are guided through building a background on the biology of one animal species and carrying out a practical investigation in a biological context. Day one introduces the animal and its ecological context, animal handling, valid environmental variables and various animal responses. The day ended with the boys deciding on and formulating their own investigation.

Day two began with an overview of bioethics in the practical context of research and education and their own investigations. The staff and teachers provide guidance for the boys as they set up and carried out their investigations. The day ended with a quick review.

Day three allowed for a replicate and any minor changes they deem prudent as a result of review.

Day three concluded with a quick guide to finding and using references and links to biological concepts in the interpretation, explanation and discussion of their investigation. The boys had the chance to be taught and supervised by Marine Scientists and PhD students as well as use equipment that is not available in a high school setting.

A huge thank you to Hanna Raven and Teresa whose help and guidance was invaluable.
