Mike King addresses Senior students

Holger Korth —

We began the term with a visit from Mike King who shared his very important message with our Senior students. Holger Korth (our School Counsellor) has taken his words and made a "rescued speech poem" from them, which appears below.

Strategy in NZ

Let’s bully the bully

Behind each bully there’s usually a bully

In their houses

Love looks like angry put-downs and a punch in the face

Instead of punishing

Strengthen what love looks like

People with self esteem issues

The inner critic is a bully

Your head is like a boiling pot

Thoughts boil over

If you put a lid on the pot

Pressure builds up

Explodes

Anger

Depression

The lid

Alcohol and drugs

Stupid expectation

Teaching kids not to cry

Teaches them to keep the lid on

Cry - nature’s way of releasing the lid

Find out what is in the pot

40% of students have major a crisis before they leave school

80% never ask for help

Think people are going to judge them

Our mental health controlled by our inner critic

Invalidation: “It’s not that bad” "Harden-up" "Get over it" "It’s all in your head

Not that helpful

What can help

A friend

My challenge; Lift people up

Look out for each other

Help people get help

Don’t give up on your mate
