Personal bests deliver at the National Age Group Swimming Championships

Vicki Jopson —

The National Age Group Swimming (NAGS) Championship was held in Napier over four days from April 15-19 and three of King's young men participated.

Day 1: saw William McFarlane and Alfie Weatherston-Harvey racing the 800 Freestyle. Both set new personal bests significantly lower than their old ones.

William took Bronze in the 15 years age group in a time of 9:01.08.

Alfie took Silver in the 16 years age group in a time of 8:38.85 which lowers his own Otago Record by around 9sec.

An update from Dan Harvey:

Day 2: saw Noah Brummitt in action for the first time. He swam the 50 Fly in a new personal best time of 27.12 which, was over a second faster than his personal best and placed him 13th.

William and Alfie both qualified for the finals of the 200 Freestyle. William finished 9th with a time of 2:04.58 which is a personal best. Alfie came 4th with a time of 1:59.11 which was a 2sec personal best and the first time he has been under 2min in a long course.

Alfie and Noah were then part of the Kiwi 4x100 Freestyle Relay team who came 7th in the 16 and over age group in a time of 3:43.47. Not bad for three 16 year olds and a 15 year old. That time is only a second away from the Otago Open Men's Freestyle Relay record!

Day 3: at NAGs saw Noah Brummitt and William McFarlane in the 100 Freestyle. Both set new personal bests with Noah just missing the final with a time of 55.47sec and William finishing 20th in 57.91.

Vicki Jopson's summary continues:

Alfie Weatherston-Harvey had a tough day with the 200 Backstroke and the 400 Individual Medley (IM). He qualified for both finals with controlled swims in the morning. In the 400 IM he set a new personal best of 4:54.65 to get 4th.

The 200 Backstroke is an event Alfie had finished 4th in at National meets on five previous occasions. However that night he went one better and took the Bronze in a new personal best time of 2:11.01.

Day 4: Noah set a new personal best in the 50 Freestyle to qualify for the final then lowered it again in the final to break the 25sec barrier for the first time, swimming 24.90.

William and Alfie took on the 1500m Freestyle.

William had a titanic battle with a swimmer from Southland which resulted in both swimmers smashing their personal bests, in Williams case by nearly 20sec, to claim the Silver in the 15 years age group.

Alfie had a superb race to take Gold in the 16 years age group in a time of 16:38.19 that placed him 3rd overall behind only the 1st and 2nd at last week's NZ Champs.

Congratulations Alfie Weatherston-Harvey, William McFarlane and Noah Brummitt on your achievements and personal bests.
