King's Mathematics talent shines at O'MAthalon

John Salisbury —

One of King's three Year 9 teams came first in a very close contest; the winning team included Raymond Yang, Aidan Blakie, Finn Stanley and Rohan Savarimuthu.

The event involves teams of four, solving Maths problems and running the answers up to the markers. Each lap is about 70 metres, and there are 30 questions, so running is as important as teamwork and problem-solving.

A Year 10 team, Lucas Armstrong, Seva Solomatenko, Basuru Thanthiriwatta and Archie Hall shared first place at the end of play, so went to a tiebreaker. They narrowly lost that, but gained a credible second place giving King's the shield for top overall school.

The other three King's teams performed admirably, gaining valuable experience and showing excellent sportsmanship.

This event was run for the first time since 2019, hosted by the Otago Mathematics Association at the Edgar Centre.

The event was incredibly well organised and students from Years 5 to 10 came from around Otago, making up about 150 teams. Thanks to Daniel Kelly and his team for making this festival of Maths a fun and exciting event. Congratulations to all who participated, all the matches were tightly contested showing that Otago has some strong Maths talent coming through.
