Literary Classics

Hugh Askerud —

Last week at 1:31pm on a hot Friday afternoon, around fifteen boys crammed themselves into the Williams room for the Grand Opening of the ‘Literary Greats’ section.

While this may sound like a highly elitist section that ranks the books of old English men and propagates them as religion, you would be sorely mistaken. The section of ‘Literary Greats’ will act as a mouthpiece for budding readers looking to make recommendations to any casual library goer who is looking for a life changing experience. Anyone will have the chance to suggest what they consider as a ‘Literary Great’ in order to open up the lives of people painted in words.

The initial books on the shelf have been assembled by our spectacular King’s High School Librarian, Mrs Vercoe, who is taking her role this year to the next level. Accompanying the opening of the shelf will be a ‘Literary Greats’ reading challenge where students have the opportunity to win various prizes depending on the amount of books they read off the shelf. This will encourage our King’s High School students who need some inspiration and who seek a different point of view, to get involved with reading. The ‘Literary Greats’ section is not just a great addition to the already highly esteemed King’s High School Library but will hopefully launch new ideas and inspire our students.

Aristotle once said that “Education of the mind without education of the heart is no education at all” so while our teachers educate the mind the new ‘Literary Greats’ section will look to educate the hearts of the students.
