King’s reigned supreme in Debating Finals
King’s reigned supreme to take out the Dunedin Schools Debating (DSD) finals in September. King’s 1, consisting of John Warman, Ben Hawke and Cam Fraser, topped off a remarkable year for Debating at King’s after winning regionals at the other major 3v3s Tournament earlier this year.
The format included 30 minutes preparation without research to present three, 7 minute speeches and a brief four minute reply. King’s broke third to the semi-finals after winning five out of the seven in-rounds, with motions varying from 'the public or private ownership of prisons' to 'sports teams being accountable for their fans behaviour'.
In the semi-finals, King’s toppled Columba College 1 negating the motion ‘This house believes that strong dictatorships are better than weak democracies’ in a narrow 2-1 split. In the finals, King’s cemented their domination with a unanimous victory over Otago Girls' High School 1, affirming the motion 'THR the recreational ownership of pets'.
