Outdoor Education students' last class walking the Paradise track

Shayne Maxwell —

On the Friday the 28th of October, the Year 11 Outdoor Education class with Mr Maxwell finished the year with a day Hike around the Otago Peninsula. The students walked the Paradise track, linked up with the Highcliff track and finished at Karetai Road.

The students focus for the term was exploring risk management strategies, so the students were tasked with selecting the appropriate equipment necessary for this trip.

Prior to the trip the weather was looking far from ideal, but we snuck in between rain squalls, strong winds and low cloud and were welcomed by world-class views while we hiked.

Throughout the year the students participated in several activities outside the classroom including, surfing, mountain biking, ice skating, curling, paintball, and hiking.

The purpose of Outdoor Education is learning outside the classroom. Mr Maxwell hopes the class has started to learn some outdoor skills and he will see them putting these to use over holidays.
