Health Curriculum Consultation

Rachel Heller —

Community Consultation closes Monday 21st March at 5pm.

As part of the Ministry of Education guidelines for Health Education, Boards of Trustees are required to conduct a consultation with their communities.

Community consultation relates specifically to Health education within a school’s curriculum. However, high quality Health education works best when it is supported by whole-school promotion of wellbeing for all students.

Parents, we welcome your feedback on this, and appreciate the time you give to it. Please read the Health Consultation Draft Delivery Statement and the Health Consultation Programme Overview below, then fill out the survey.

Parents and caregivers are welcome to contact us for further information about the programme. Enquiries should be directed to Mr Aaron Corkhill, Head of Physical Education and Health on co@kingshigh.school.nz

2022 - King’s High School Health Curriculum Draft Delivery Statement

King’s High School is committed to Building Men for Life by encouraging and driving our young men to strive for personal excellence in academic pursuits, sporting achievement and cultural endeavours. The development of resilient personal character is instrumental to and intertwined through the entire process. Our vision is underpinned by the school’s values;

  • Excellence
  • Respect
  • Integrity
  • Fairness
  • Responsibility
  • Participation
  • Compassion

We offer Health education that provides the opportunity for each student to develop their critical thinking. They’re also given access to the knowledge they need to be healthy and to contribute to the wellbeing of others and the community.

Health education helps students learn the values of the New Zealand Curriculum. Respect for tikanga Māori is maintained through acknowledging the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi and by being responsive to the national priorities for ākonga.

At King’s High School, Health education is integrated into the King’s Man Programme for all Year 9 and 10 students and in Year 10 Physical Education, along with many other opportunities in the senior school.

Key areas of learning provide contexts for students to develop skills to become physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually healthy. We explore: hauora; alcohol and drugs; mental health; sexuality education; and nutrition. Throughout all these topics, students will develop their ability to think critically, manage themselves, participate and contribute and relate to others – all key competencies in the New Zealand Curriculum.

We also use external providers to complement the Health programme. Classes from these providers add real-life context to the learning students have already had in their Health classes. All the material covered in these classes and the people involved are reviewed by the Head of Physical Education and Health before delivery to ensure it aligns with our school curriculum and meets the learning needs of our students. A student survey is conducted at the conclusion of the unit.

All health and wellbeing initiatives at our school build on what is taught in these classes. Some groups of students are supported to be involved in student-led programmes that create an inclusive school community where being healthy and well is encouraged.

Health Education is provided to every student. Some may need further support, and we have a school guidance team who can provide this.
