First XI Hockey finish in 3rd Place at Coaches Cup
The 1st XI Hockey team travelled to Timaru during Winter Tournament Week and came away with a Bronze medal. On day one against Lincoln High School a hat trick of goals early in the first quarter from James Broderick gave the side a great confidence boost and the team went on to win the game 5-0.
Day two against Roncalli College saw a repeat of a student hat trick, with Alex MacDonald slotting all the goals and the final score being 3-0. This guaranteed the team a place in the semi-finals with a game in hand.
The last round of pool play saw the team take on Cashmere High School to determine who would finish top of the pool. This was a very tight game that was played with a lot of intensity, and the scores were tied at 2-2 going into the final quarter. Cashmere were able to put a final goal away in the last quarter and the team knew they would now be facing Shirley Boys' High School in the semi-final.
In the semi-final the bounce of the ball did not go the team's way, and the final score of 6-2 belied the fierce competition that took place. To the team's credit, at no stage did they give up and they continued to fight for the full 60 minutes of the game.
The playoff for third and fourth against Waitaki Boys' High School also appeared to be a one sided affair, with King's winning 7-0 and Alex MacDonald scoring another hat trick. The team did save their best performance for last, and on reflection probably wished they had played the game before the same way. Gaining a Bronze medal from the tournament was a good improvement from 2022 where the team finished fifth.
The team would like to thank Chris Aubin for travelling with them and filling the role of Coach in the absence of Dave Ross. We would also like to pass on a massive thanks to Julie Broderick and Gardens New World for all her efforts in ensuring that every player was well fed over the length of the tournament, along with all our supporters.
