King’s students take action for nature

Debbie Vercoe —

The Enviro-Club created inspiring daily themed activities to celebrate Conservation Week “Take action for nature” held in the Library this week.

Mr McPherson and members of the Enviro Club provided three questions for a Daily Quiz relating to each theme and, thanks to the Student Council, there were prizes for the three winning entries.

Marine Monday encouraged us to think about what we can do to protect our oceans and marine life.

On Trapping Tuesday Ted Menzies talked to a “captive” audience on his endeavours to trap pests and save the native birds. Ted’s presentation outlined the different types of pests, the lethal damage they cause and how they can be caught in garden traps. He showed us different types of traps and encouraged us all to “take action” and get involved in the Trapping Programme.

On Woodland Wednesday we had a presentation from Dr Angus McPherson from the University of Otago. He spoke about the “Trees for Bees” Programme and explained the intricacies and importance of pollinators and pollination.

Once again, the audience were rewarded with an interesting and informative talk and we were left with lots to think about and encouraged to “take action”. Dr McPherson generously donated two copies of the “Handbook for Planting Trees for Bees on Farms”. These are a welcome addition to our Library resources.

Thursday’s theme was The Three R's: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. A timely reminder that this is something we can all do to “take action” for nature.

On Flora and Fauna Friday, Massimo Pezzuto prepared and presented a documentary for students to view at lunchtime in the Library. Liam Thorne and Massimo Pezzuto set up an intriguing and eye-catching display in the Library to showcase a selection of books and topics for students to ponder.

Overall, we had a successful and stimulating week of focusing on taking action for nature. Our grateful thanks to Mr McPherson and the Enviro committee for their efforts in planning the events. Particular thanks to Ted Menzies, Massimo Pezzuto, Liam Thorne and Jaydean Washington for their efforts and enthusiasm in making this happen.
