What a classic!

Debbie Vercoe —

Hugh Askerud leaves a literacy challenge as he departs King's

Hugh Askerud enjoys reading and, this year, he was instrumental in setting up a Classics Collection in the library, to highlight and promote some of the greatest works of fiction ever written.

Hugh set himself a goal of reading as many of these classic works of literature as he could, in between a busy academic and sports schedule. He was hoping to match Mr Turner’s total of 30 and was getting close by the end of the year. He challenged other students to join him on his epic reading journey and 15 students signed up for the challenge. James Schollum and Tigue McGregor read as many as Hugh, with more than 15 titles read. Most of the others read between 5 and 10 titles from the collection. A fantastic effort.

One of Hugh’s favourite stories is “Cannery Row” by John Steinbeck. A book which is packed with invention and joie de vivre. It is Steinbeck’s high-spirited tribute to his native California.

Hugh intends to keep reading the classics and he leaves the literary challenge as a legacy to other students to challenge themselves and broaden their knowledge and appreciation for great literary works.

Thank you, Hugh, for enhancing the library and promoting reading, thereby enriching the lives of your fellow students. We wish you all the best in your future endeavours.
