Defence wins Championships

Gabriella Hyndman —

King’s 1st XI won the Malcolm Cowie Football Tournament held in Papakura, Auckland last week, beating a variety of schools with strong footballing pedigree.

After three days and five games of Football, King’s finished top of its group with four wins and one draw. They won their Quarter Final against Takapuna Grammar School and then defending champs St Andrew’s College in a Semi-Final clash.

The Final was played against Burnside High School, where Captain Max Davidson stepped up and with ice in his veins shut out all the noise and pressure to calmly slot a penalty and put King’s one nil up. The final few minutes of the game saw Burnside High School pile on the pressure, but just like they had all Tournament the King’s lads defended their hearts out and refused to concede.

The moment when the full time whistle blew will be one that lives long in the memory for these young men, in particular for the eight Year 13 students who finish their careers at King’s as champions.

  • 7 wins, 1 draw
  • 18 goals scored, 3 goals conceded
  • 5 clean sheets
