Taiaha ki Kīngi - Taiaha at King’s

Matu Pene —

Patua kia mōhio.

Hit them, so they'll know.

Although not a teaching proverb used at King's, this is a whakatauki used with Te Whare Tū Taua, the taiaha style these students are learning on a Thursday evening.

Students from King's are able to gain 15 Achievement Standards at Level 1 when they pass their poutahi grading, after a year of training. The students are graded on footwork, taiaha movements, fighting ability and te reo.

This year's intake are looking sharp at this stage. The Whare Tū Taua was established by Dr. Pita Sharples with our local pouwaru (highest level instructor) Aaron Hāpuku in Christchurch. If any students, parents or staff are keen to join or want to know more, kōrero to Matua Matu on pm@kingshigh.school.nz
