Big Sing 2022

Emmanuel Keane —

King's and Queen's have done it again!

Not only did we have a great time singing, but we also, yet again, won a Trophy and an award during The Big Sing Competition!

On Monday the 13th of June, students across all years from the King’s and Queen’s combined Choir Polyhymnia, went to Knox Church for The Big Sing competition.

This year’s Big Sing was noticeably smaller than usual with 13 choirs from across the Otago and Southern Canterbury districts competing throughout the day.

Due to Covid, this year's Big Sing only required choirs to sing two songs instead of three, but this didn’t take away the opportunity for us to perform and show what our Choir has accomplished in such a short time. As a combined Choir, there were many disruptions due to Covid including the inability to practice as a combined Choir until just over a month prior to the competition!

It was great to have this opportunity to participate again in the Big Sing, after not being able to do performing arts for quite some time. Last year we missed out on the opportunity to compete at the Cazenda in Timaru, but we’re hoping we have the chance this year.

The combination of the high vocals from the girls with the boys' lower voices gave us the opportunity to harmonize with each other, and we were the only schools that combined for the Big Sing competition in our region.

Just last year we were placed first in category 1, Best performance for an NZ composition, and this year Polyhymnia still proved to be strong as we were awarded the:

  • Isabel Chetwin Trophy, The most improved Choir which has not been selected to a finale in the last three years.

And also

  • Otago Regional Committee Conductor’s award, This includes $500 towards the fee for attending the Choral Connect in July.

A huge thanks to all King’s and Queen’s students who were in Polyhymnia, and we couldn’t have done this without the help and dedication (to put up with us) from (King’s) Ms White and Ms Dryden and from (Queen’s) Ms Irvine.

Enjoy the clip from the ODT.
