Positive Education: The Season of Gratitude

Barbara May —

One thing that keeps us in a positive frame of mind is gratitude.

Another school year comes to a close, Christmas is drawing near and we are anticipating the summer holidays. Many of us will be reflecting on the year that has been and thinking of our New Year resolutions.

While there have been some anxiety-inducing challenges over recent months, optimism, hope and a sense of purpose combine to build resilience.

One thing that keeps us in a positive frame of mind is gratitude. It works for both the giver and the receiver. When we do something nice for someone else, say thank you, give a written card or gift, the recipient obviously will feel happy. Perhaps surprisingly, the person showing gratitude also feels happier when they see the effect their effort has on the other person.

Spending time together, giving a card or a small gift, being kind to one another, laughing and showing you care is the basis for a great Christmas celebration.

If the weather is also nice, that’s a bonus! Kia kaha
