Surfing in February

Darren Eade —

Jack Higgins’ (Year 9) stunning few weeks.

Jack has been competing in the North Island Grom series, pitted against the best surfers in the North Island. This is a NZ rated event and his fantastic fourth place finish puts him in the top ten of U14 surfers in NZ according to the current rankings.

The Billabong Grom series, Event #2 was held in Whangamata, 11-12th Feb, just before the cyclone hit in 3ft messy conditions.

Jack controlled his first round heats, moving through the quarter and semi finals knocking out some of New Zealand’s best U14 surfers to make the grand final. The grand final was bit of a lottery in terms of who found the best waves.

Jack Higgins also won the recent Otago Champs’ U14 Division, competing against two other amazing young King’s surfers Keo Morrison and Flint Sherborne-France.

Lewis Murphy (Year 11) also competed in the Grom series in the North Island and narrowly lost his first heat. He is currently ranked in the top 15 in the NZ rankings for U16 surfers.

Finally, King’s and Waitaki Boys' High School have just had the first Interschool Surfing competition in living memory. King’s ended up winning the event in fun conditions at St Clair on a beautiful sunny day on Monday (39-30). The boys competed using the Surfing Tag Team format and their best individual two scores contributed to the team’s overall score.

Karne Gabbott, the captain of the team, was the top performer for King’s on the day while Kyle Jenner for Waitaki Boys’ High School was the outstanding surfer for them.
