Mechatronics at King's

Andrew Bowen —

Three King's students with a keen interest in Design and Technology created an Electro-Mechanical Car.

Year 9 Raymond Yang, and Year 10 students Xikai Zhang and Jamal Millar have been designing, developing and prototyping a range of ideas at an after school Mechatronics Extension Group. They were given a motor, a battery and a switch and asked the question: “What can I make with these components that would be cool?”

Mechatronics may not be a familiar word that you encounter in everyday life, but in the 21st century and the society that we live in, Mechatronics is all around us. From automatic doors, elevators, power steering in your car to the stylis head on the old record player, Mechatronics is using our understanding of Mechanics and Electrical Engineering to improve the quality and efficiency of the world around us.

Students at King's High School have taken up the opportunity to do Mechatronics as an extension activity after school to explore this world.

Motivation plays a big part in the success of these students, they have a keen interest in design and making, and through the process of prototyping, testing and modifying, they are meeting with success.
