A Celebration of Excellence

Cameron McPhail —

In February we acknowledged 20 young men who had reached the summit of NZ Secondary School education. Between them in the 2022 Scholarship Exams they gained 41 Scholarships across 15 different subject areas.

Gaining a Scholarship pass places each of these students in the top 3% in the country in a subject area, for some in multiple subject areas. Of the 41 Scholarships awarded to our Kingsmen, two were also at Outstanding level, going to Cam Fraser and Ben Hawke. Both of these were in Health and Physical Education, placing Cam and Ben in the top 0.3% of students nationwide in this subject.

With 41 Scholarship passes King’s ranks as the top performing school in the Otago/Southland region and the top performing boys' school in the entire South Island in the 2022 Scholarship Exams.

Over the last five years, from 2018 to 2022, King’s students have amassed a total of 208 Scholarships at an average of just over 40 per year. These impressive stats are not an accident. They are the sum of a purposeful and habitual pursuit of excellence by our teachers and our students. Put simply, Excellence is what we do at 270 Bay View Road, Dunedin. It is our mission to become the best all-round boy’s school in the South Island – in academics, arts, culture, and sport. This is not so that we can compare ourselves to other schools and say that we are number one, but instead so that we can say that the young men at King’s High School get the best education possible; an education that is second to none. These recipients represent another step toward our fulfilment of that mission.

These Scholarship results were the boys’ achievements first and foremost; however, it would be remiss not to formally acknowledge the work of the staff here at King’s.

I want to make special mention of the following teachers who have directly contributed to the success of our Scholarship winners: Mrs Vicki Jopson and Mrs Hannah Cromarty, Biology; Mr Nick Kyle, Calculus; Mr Haji Higashitani, Chemistry; Mr Bryan Frost, Classical Studies; Mrs Sarah Sharma, Design; Dr Damien Gibson and Mr Darren Eade, English; Mrs Robyn Brooks, French; Mr Simon Cushen and Miss Gabriella Hyndman, Geography; Mr Aaron Corkhill, Health and Physical Education; Mr Sam Fielding, History; Mr Blair Kennedy, Painting; Mr James MacPherson, Statistics; Mr Jesse Farry, Physics; Mr Matu Pene, Te Reo Maori.

This recognition is also extended to all of our teachers and support staff. It’s a team effort and they are all vital in supporting the culture that has enabled these young men to thrive. Their commitment to our students and to their success is what makes this a special place.
