Music Masterclass from a Master Alumni

Jo Dryden —

Chris Fennessy, ex-King’s High School student and international operatic star who has performed in operas and musicals throughout New Zealand, Asia, South Africa and on the West End in London, shared his words of advice last Friday in a two hour master-class with our own budding musical theatre enthusiasts.

After watching each student present a prepared performance, Chris asked them to repeat their performance with him on-stage. He then stopped them at certain points throughout to offer suggestions and demonstrate ways to improve their performance. The students then re-presented their song, applying the suggested changes, and were able to see the effect these changes had on their performance. Suggestions were sometimes very small - perhaps a change in vocal technique, or a simple stage movement or stance that made their performances ‘come to life’.

The results were dramatic and the boys all left the two hour masterclass feeling inspired and armed with plenty of food for thought.
