First XI vs Shirley BHS Interschool Report

Simon Cushen & Bradley Scott —

King’s captain Beckham Wheeler-Greenall won the toss and decided to bowl on a wicket that looked as though it would assist the fast bowlers.

At 6 for 98 the decision looked like a good one. Shirley Boys' then mounted a fight back and declared at 160 for 8 off 65 overs. The pick of the King’s bowlers were Beckham Wheeler-Greenall with 4 for 38 and Kyle Hastie with 2 for 23. Nathan Hastie was as economical as ever with 1 for 16 off 14 overs including 7 maidens.

King’s replied with 145 for 9 declared 30 minutes before the end of the day’s play. Top run scorers were Beckham Wheeler- Greenall with 54. A quick fire 23 not out from Drew Kinney, who was ably supported by Kasey Short with a rapid 21, saw King’s through to a total where they could declare.

With half an hour to bat before stumps, Shirley were looking to play it safe but had not bargained on a demanding King’s bowling attack. Their top order was destroyed and were four down for 10 runs at the close of play. The morning session of day two saw a continuation of this bowling effort with the Shirley batsman struggling against the swinging ball from Kyle Hastie and Finn Ward and were bowled out for 22. Kyle Hastie had the remarkable figures of 6 wickets for 1 run off 7 overs while Finn Ward returned 2 for 12.

King’s opening batsmen Beckham Wheeler-Greenall and Ethan Booth chased the 38 needed for victory in under 5 overs giving King’s one of their most convincing interschool victories in recent memory.

The King’s Junior cricket team also had a dominant performance versus Shirley BHS, winning by an innings and 109 runs inside a day. King’s batted first making 192/6 declared. Joost Doherty top scored with 43 not out. Shirley were dismissed for 32 and 51 respectively, with spinners Oram Gutsell taking 6/27 and Lachie Cowan 4/8, across the two innings.
