King's Debating Skills garner 2nd Place and a Highly Commended Speaker Award

Damien Gibson —

The recent Mid-Season Debating Champs saw four King's teams, the most of any school, dedicate their Saturday to four in-rounds and finals.

All of the King's teams managed to get on the board, with King's 2 (Alex van der Vliet and John Warman) and King's 3 (Hasan Sheikh and Samuel Mitchell) winning 2/4 debates. King's 4 (Juandre Rademeyer and Ted Menzies) also clutched out their third debate against John McGlashan College 1 to strike against stiff opposition. King's 2 and 3 also versed each other twice, and with one win apiece a rematch is in order.

King's 1 (Cam Fraser and Ben Hawke pictured) saw our two Year 13 icons of King's debating remain as the only undefeated team after the in-rounds on 4/4 wins. However, they fell down in the final hurdle against Columba College 1 in the Grand Final and finished as runners-up in a motion which had a premise similar to Ratatouille, where King's unsuccessfully affirmed making knowledge of the rat public.

Cam Fraser was also recognised with a Highly Commended Speaker Award.

Motions varied widely, from a wealth tax, to decriminalising all drugs, being a nature filmmaker and deciding whether to save an octopus it had been filming for a year from a shark attack.

The format was different to the normal 3v3s, as teams consisted of only two members, speeches were reduced to six minutes, and teams only had a brisk 15 minutes to craft their cases.
