Junior students involved in Marine Reserves Programme

Daniel Bleckinger —

On 25th of March, a group of Juniors went to Mapoutahi to experience diving in a marine environment. They were participants in the 2017 Experiencing Marine Reserves Programme who focus is on getting people interested in preserving and enjoying marine ecosystems.

As part of the programme, the students engaged in a classroom session where they learned about marine reserves, how successful they are at preserving marine environments, and about some of the proposed areas for marine reserves in the Otago region.

After their experience in the coastal waters at Mapoutahi, the boys are now working on artwork and proposals for supporting and promoting marine reserves in Otago. Their work will be entered into a competition where they will have a chance to win an all-expenses paid trip to the Poor Knights Island to go diving at the end of May.

Good luck boys!
